The main point to be developed—
Contemporary educational practices shortchange the development of the inner life of persons in favor of modestly preparing people for economic and civic life. As a result, people feel vulnerable, anxious, and adrift without a vision of a more meaningful future. Our cultural circumstances actually encompass significant resources for supporting the nurture of a person's inner strengths. A Place to Study will facilitate their fuller activation.

In French, actualité expresses things we would call "news," topical things, current developments, all with a sense of their actuality, their real presence. Hence "fake news" is a difficult concept to express in French.

Here on A Place to Study we want to situate under the heading "Actualités" something more that listings of "what's new"or "trending topics." Study, particularly study leading to self-formation and liberal learning, are not high-visibility matters in contemporary life. We seek to cultivate and expand their precence, but doing so in a merely hortatory way won't go very far. These topics, we think, have a real presence in contelmporary life, an ostensible presence too often overlooked, and a "presence of ommission" evident in destructive tendencies in contemporary culture, the "deaths of despair" and nihilistic willfulness in the uses of power.
